Check out some of the new additions to Patrick County. The Blue Ridge Tap House is the newest restaurant on Stuart’s North Main Street. They feature a variety of craft beers, margarita flights, delicious food, and more. The Ye Olde What-Not Shoppe and The Depot Station are located in downtown Stuart. Stop by Olivia’s Goodie Shop for delicious cupcakes and other sweet treats. Over in Ararat, The Red Rooster Amusement Park and Cafe offers fun rides and great food. This fun attraction will open for the season in April. Hike the newly opened trails at the Stuart Rotary Club and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

Take in Arts and Culture

Rose Window Studio is a charming art gallery with a large selection of stained glass art. Gather a group of friends and schedule a beginner-friendly stained-glass class. Call 276-930-2102 for more information and opening hours.

For beautiful art and great food, head over to Pickle & Ash. From the beautiful Lady Appalachia Mural outside to the paintings and photographs inside, Pickle & Ash showcases the amazing artists in Patrick County and beyond.

If you love live music you’ll love the Historic Star Theatre in Downtown Stuart.

Race fans should make the Virginia Motorsports Museum And Hall Of Fame and the Wood Brother’s Racing Museum must-see stops this year. See how moonshine was made and hear the fascinating story of how this business led directly to the birth of NASCAR racing. Both museums are a part of the new Moonshine Heritage Trail.

The Coffee Break serves up delicious food and great music every Tuesday morning. Owned by Patrick County Music Association founder Denny Alley, the Coffee Break is an iconic piece of Stuart’s North Main Street.

Every Friday night in the beautiful community of Ararat visitors can experience a unique piece of The Crooked Road. The Willis Gap Community Center hosts an open jam for anyone who plays, sings, or wants to listen. Whether you’re local or just passing through, the community jam is a perfect place to stop to get a taste of The Crooked Road.

Try the View from the Top

If you are looking for somewhere to sit and relax and take in a beautiful view stop by Angel Overlook and see the magnificent views of the mountains. Angel Overlook is located near many of Patrick County’s most famous attractions such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Primland, Laurel Hill, and Doe Run Farm.

Lover’s Leap and Fred Clifton Park offer some of Patrick County’s most stunning views. Located along Highway 58, both overlooks are minutes from Stuart and Meadows of Dan.

Live Life in the Fast Lane

winding road through mountain

The 10-mile loop of Squirrel Spur packs enough twists, turns, and drops to top every motorcyclist’s bucket list. A casual drive will give you a glimpse into the rural countryside with cow pastures, tobacco fields, and pumpkin patches. For most riders, the view will be a blur of color as you ride through a thrilling series of turns, switchbacks, steep climbs, and sharp drops.

Possibly the most famous stretch of the Jagged Edge, Bootlegger’s Run packs more than 100 curves into its 30-mile drive between the towns of Floyd and Ferrum, passing through Woolwine along the way. This run gets its name because it goes through the heart of one of Appalachia’s most notorious moonshine trails. If this unique piece of American history is not enough, the ride boasts some of the Blue Ridge Mountains’ most spectacular views.

The quiet hills and hollers of Southwest Virginia were once home to hundreds of moonshine stills. Moonshining was once a vital part of the area’s economy, especially during times of hardship. Families took to creating the illegal drink when money got tight and resources stretched thin. The ingredients needed were readily available and the byproducts could be sold as animal feed. The isolation and lack of infrastructure helped moonshiners hide their stills and delivery sites. Today, remnants of this era can be found all over the region. In April 2024, Patrick County, in partnership with Floyd and Franklin Counties, announced plans for the Mountain Spirit Trail. The trail will take visitors through historic sites, parks, scenic backroads, and distilleries. Below are some of the sites in Patrick County that will be included on the trail.

Fairy Stone State Park

Fairy Stone State Park is the perfect destination for outdoor lovers and families. With miles of trails to explore and easy access to Fairy Stone Lake, the park has become a favorite among locals and travelers alike. Fairy Stone offers a variety of educational events and guided hikes for kids and adults. Along with the fun outdoor activities, visitors can learn about the park’s unique history. Buried beneath Fairy Stone Lake is the town of Fayerdale, a once thriving “boom-town” built around the mining and logging industries. Visitors can learn more about the park’s history through ranger-led activities. We recommend the Moonshine Hollow Hike, Moonshine Murders, Fayerdale: The Forgotten Town, and Corn ‘Squeezins’.

I.C. Dehart Park

I.C. Dehart Park is a beautiful, multi-acre park located on a reclaimed wetland site. Visitors enjoy the extensive trail system and natural beauty. The park is a popular destination for mountain bikers, who enjoy the miles of piedmont-style trails. I.C. Dehart Park was once home to the F. DeHart Distillery, which operated legally in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The Reynolds Homestead

The Reynolds Homestead is one of the most iconic historic sites in Patrick County. The homestead was donated by Nancy Reynolds to Virginia Tech. The Reynolds House and other historic buildings have been preserved. Looming past the house is No Business Mountain, which housed numerous moonshining operations. The mountain earned its name from the locals stating that no one had any business on that mountain except moonshiners and rattlesnakes. The property is open daily from dawn to dusk. Historic house tours are offered on Sundays.

The Patrick County Historical Museum

The Patrick County Historical Museum is a small museum connected to the Blue Ridge Regional Library. The museum houses a moonshine still and other historic artifacts. Exhibits highlight over two hundred years of history of Patrick County. The museum displays hundreds of items relating to the history of Patrick County Virginia.

The Virginia Motorsports Museum and Hall of Fame

The Virginia Motorsports Museum and Hall of Fame is a must-stop for race fans. This little museum packs a big punch. See how moonshine was made and hear the fascinating story of how this business led directly to the birth of NASCAR racing. The motorsports museum is open weekly.

The Wood Brothers Racing Museum

The Wood Brothers Racing Museum is a must-stop for NASCAR fans! Wood Brothers Racing was founded in the 1950s by Patrick County native Glen Wood. They are one of the oldest NASCAR teams in the sport. The museum houses the team’s retired cars and other artifacts from the team’s decades of racing.

Every Friday night in the beautiful community of Ararat visitors can experience a unique piece of The Crooked Road. The Willis Gap Community Center hosts an open jam for anyone who plays, sings, or wants to listen.

The open jam is an important part of the community. It is a place for young and old to gather and share their talents and love of music. It is free and open to anyone who would like to join. Whether you’re local or just passing through, the community jam is a perfect place to stop to get a taste of The Crooked Road.

The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail covers 330 miles of Southwest Virginia and is a rich piece of history and culture for the region. Since its creation in 2003, The Crooked Road has been connecting the rural communities of Southwest Virginia through music.

Folks have been jamming at the Willis Gap Community Center for over twenty-five years. From bluegrass to Appalachian heritage, old-time to gospel, you can always expect to find some pickin’ and grinnin’ here on Friday nights. The kitchen opens at 6pm and serves hotdogs, chips, drinks, and baked goods. Music begins at 7pm and goes until 10pm.

If bluegrass isn’t your cup of tea, the community center also hosts Golden Oldies Night on the last Tuesday of each month. If 50s, 60s, and 70s rock and roll is your jam, then you’ll be right at home.

Rock Churches of the Blue Ridge

Rev. Robert Childress built six rock churches throughout the tri-county area of Floyd, Patrick, and Carroll. These beautiful fieldstone churches were successfully built and founded between 1919 and 1954 to raise the community up out of poverty and crime. The Rock Churches were added to the National Registrar of Historic Places in 2007. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounding back roads to see them all.

Start at the intersection of Route 8 and the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd and head south. Travel 6.6 miles past Tuggles Gap, Rocky Knob Cabins, The Saddle Overlook, Rock Castle Gorge Overlook, Rocky Knob Visitors Center, Rocky Knob Overlook, Floydfest Site, and Villa Appalachia Winery until you come to Rock Chuch Road on your left. Follow that road for 1.4 miles before you get to Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church on your right.

Slate Mountain Church

Built in 1932, this large rock church features a squared gothic revival bell tower, a large picnic shelter, and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The congregation was originally founded under Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church, and after significantly growing in size, Slate Mountain become its own church in 1939.

Travel back to the Blue Ridge Parkway and turn left to continue south. Travel 2.2 miles and turn right onto Conner Grove Rd SW (route 799). Travel for 8.9 miles to the end of the road. Turn left onto Floyd Hwy S (route 221) and travel 0.2 miles. You will see Willis Presbyterian Church coming up on your left. Turn left onto Burks Fork Rd SW to park at the church.

Willis Church

Willis Presbyterian Church (now called the New Beginnings House of God) was built in 1954 and features a Gothic Revival bell tower in the northeastern corner of the structure. Across from the church is the accompanying cemetery with a matching stone wall.

Turn left on Floyd Hwy S (route 221) and travel for 2.9 miles. Fork left onto Buffalo Mountain Rd SW (route 758) and travel for 4.7 miles. Turn right onto Rock Church Rd Sw and travel for 0.9 miles and you will see Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church on your left.

Buffalo Mountain Church

The Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church in the community of Willis was built in 1929. The Rev. Bob Childress and his family are buried in the adjacent cemetery, boarded with a matching fieldstone wall that looks out at Buffalo Mountain in the distance. The small building on your right used to provide water to the church and to the three-story Buffalo Mountain Schoolhouse which is on your left.

Continue down Rock Church Road SW to the end (0.9 miles), then turn left onto Buffalo Mountain Road SW (route 758). From there, drive 4.7 miles to the end of the road, then take a left onto Floyd Pike (route 221). Drive 3.3 miles, then take a right onto Double Cabin Rd (route 753). Drive 6.8 miles and take a right onto Homestead Road (route 750). Drive 2.7 miles and you will see the beautiful Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church on your right.

Dinwiddie Church

Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church is named after the Reverend Doctor Dinwiddie, who founded the congregation in 1897. They met under the neighboring pine grove every Sunday for years until Robert Childress came along and built them their beautiful rock church between 1946 and 1953. This rock church features the second gothic-style tower Childress built. This church welcomes you to step inside while you are there to witness the beautiful interior of the building. They accept donations both on-site and on their website that partially goes toward their mission fund to help those outside of their church.

From here, turn left onto Mitchels Crossroads (route 752) and drive 2.9 miles to the end of the road. Turn left onto Deer Ridge Road (route 783) and drive 0.8 miles to the end of the road. Turn left on to Sylvatus Rd. (route 100) and drive for 3.8 miles. Continue straight over Hwy 221 to Hardscuffle Rd which turns to Springwillow Dr. (route 669) and drive for 1.7 miles. Take a right onto Danville Pike and drive for 1.1 miles. Turn left onto Snake Creek Rd (route 670) and drive 12.6 miles. Turn right onto Thunder Ridge Rd (route 677). Drive for 0.9 miles and continue onto Dustry Ridge Rd. After 400 feet, turn left onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. Travel the parkway for 2.8 miles. Turn right onto Hiriam Stanley Ln and you will see Bluemont Presbyterian Church on your left.

Bluemont Church

Located at milepost 192 on the Blue Ridge Parkway is Bluemont Presbyterian Church. This church was built and founded in 1919 and named for its first pastor, Rev. Roy Smith. In 1946, Robert Childress came along to encase the original building in beautiful fieldstones with a small gothic tower in the rear.

Travel back towards the Parkway and turn right (North). Travel 11.8 miles and you will see Mayberry Presbyterian Church on your right. Turn right onto Maple Swamp Rd (route 600) and immediately right again onto Mayberry Church Rd (route 602) and you will see parking for the church on your right.

Mayberry Church

The congregation of Mayberry Presbyterian Church can be dated back to 1924 to a group that met in the Mayberry Schoolhouse that sat across the road from where the church stands today. As a seminary student, Robert Childress was conducting a revival with the congregation when it was decided that the group needed an organized structure and a building. Many pledges of land, materials, and time were given in 1924 and a structure was built the following year. Robert Childress incased the building in stone in 1948, the first of the six rock churches to be completed.

Meadows of Dan

Get back on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head North for 2.4 miles until you reach the charming village of Meadows of Dan. Here you can find great artisan shopping at Poor Farmer’s Market and Concord Corner Store, country-style meals at Jane’s Country Cafe, and freshly-made fudge and other candies at Nacy’s Candy Co.

Floyd

You can also continue up the Parkway for 12.5 miles to the Route 8/Floyd exit where you started your tour and continue North on Route 8 about (5.5 miles) toward the fun little town of Floyd, home of the famous Floyd Country Store Friday Night Jamboree, Dogtown Roadhouse pizza & music venue, Cocoa Mia candy store, Hey Helen boutique clothing, and a variety of other unique shopping and restaurants.

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs 469 miles through the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. To its millions of travelers annually, this mountaintop roadway is known for its scenic beauty, historic attractions and abundant outdoor recreation. Riding on the Parkway can give you that much needed getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. You can drive for hours without seeing much civilization. At milepost 177.7 you will see one of the rarest views on your ride: a town. Refuel your car, your stomach and your soul in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.

Rocky Knob Recreation Area

Drive along the parkway North of the Meadows of Dan Village and you will find the Rocky Knob Recreation Area. This expansive section of the Parkway is shared with the neighboring county of Floyd. Here there are three trails ranging from easy to difficult. The most challenging is the Rock Castle Gorge National Recreation Trail, a 10.4 mile loop offering intense elevations, meadow strolls, steep descents, historical hideaways, abundant wildlife and even a waterfall. The second is the Black Ridge Tail, a moderate 3 mile loop with its own historical ruins and creeks. The third is The Rocky Knob Trail, an easy 2.3 mile out and back trail with a shelter at the top offering a stunning view. The Rocky Knob Visitors Center is open Friday through Monday from 10 AM until 5 PM for area information and assistance. Stay for a picnic and you may even spot the family of deer that are often seen grazing in the field near the picnic shelter most evenings! Pitch your tent or park your camper at the Rocky Knob Campground. Reservations are not necessary but are always helpful. www.recreation.gov or (877) 444-6777

Wineries on the Parkway

Wine lovers will enjoy the two neighboring wineries in this section of the Parkway. Villa Appalaccia (which sits next to the famous festival grounds of Floydfest) is a charming, Italian-inspired winery. Those with a taste for drier, European-styled wines will find themselves at home in the Villa’s open aired tasting room. Villa Appalaccia offers music on Saturday afternoons in the summer. Just down the road is the well known Chateau Morrisette Winery & Restaurant. The largest producing winery in Virginia, Chateau Morrisette offers guests an expansive tasting room & gift shop, tours, live outdoor music and a French-inspired restaurant. Both wineries are very dog friendly! Chateau Morrisette has three wines named after dogs in honor of the late David Morrisette’s own beloved canine companion. Both locations have lawn space for picnics and Chateau Morrisette Restaurant offers picnic style order to go!

Historic Grist Mills

The historic Mabry Mill is the most photographed spot on the Parkway. You will find this exact mill pictured on postcards, framed prints and used on various “homestyle” product packaging and marketing across the world. This grist mill is over one hundred years old and is open to the public! In the Summer and early Fall Thursday through Sunday 10AM – 5PM, travelers can go inside the mill and learn how it operates with the help of an educational interpreter. See the newly renovated flume and watch the giant wheel turn with the water. There are also live demonstrations of blacksmiths, basket weavers and more. Listen to live traditional music on Sundays as well. After your tour, grab a seat at the restaurant just next door and purchase souvenirs from the gift shop.

Off the Parkway, down the road from the village is Cockram Mill. This 130-year-old grist mill sits on the banks of the Dan River. Visitors can tour the inside of the mill and eat at the accompanying restaurant attached which offers an outdoor patio overlooking the river and the water wheel. The site of the mill was once the docking point for the Dan River Queen, a popular passenger paddle boat tour. The river has since become too small to allow for boats.

The Village

Just past the Parkway entrance is the charming hub of the Meadows of Dan Village. Here you will find your road trip essentials like gas, food at Jane’s Country Cafe and unique shopping opportunities. Stop in the Blue Ridge Visitors Center for area information and maps. Poppy’s will warm your heart with locally hand-spun yarn, books, quality gifts, and alpaca-themed items.

Poor Farmers Market has a classic country store feel. Inside you will find souvenirs to satisfy every travelers tastes, freshly prepared sandwiches and snacks, hand scooped ice cream, glass bottle sodas, local honeys, jams, etc. as well as a few oddities here and there. Outside there are fresh seasonal fruits and veggies, potted plants, handmade wooden patio furniture, and much more.

Concord Corner Store sits at the edge of the village. This store sells high quality artisan crafts from the surrounding area. Bring home something beautiful and special from your travels like beautiful quilts, jewelry, woodworks, glassware, local beers and wines, and so much more.

Nancy’s Candy Co.

Just past the main hub of the village is Nancy’s Candy Company; a giant candy factory! Nancy’s sells primarily wholesale around the world, but visitors to the factory don’t have to buy in wholesale to leave with Nancy’s sugary goodness (unless you just want to!). The retail storefront has every kind of candy you can imagine for purchase. Nancy’s started out primarily making fudge, which has remained their specialty to this day. Alongside their famous fudge sits a variety of truffles and other chocolate-covered treats behind the counter. Around the sales floor are classic candies to take you back, novelty chocolates (like chocolate soap or Virginia-shaped chocolate bars), bagged snacks like cajun snack mix, a wall of Jelly Belly jelly beans and so much more. Along the back wall of the store are large windows where visitors can watch the candy being made in the factory on the weekdays. Be sure to take a selfie at their LOVE sign and tag #loveVA before you leave!

Primland Resort

Miles off of route 58 is one of the Parkways greatest hidden treasures, Primland Resort. This five-star luxury mountain resort is best known for it’s award-winning golf course, the Highland Course. Primland offers much to do, many ways to relax, and various accommodation options for travelers. Participate in guided outdoor adventures like ATV rides, hikes, hunting and more. Dine at one of their three styled restaurants. Rejuvenate yourself at their Native-American themed spa. Gaze at the stars in Primland’s very own observatory with nightly shows by their in-house astronomer. Love it so much you want to stay? Book a room or suite in the lodge, a private guest house, or even a luxury tree house with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Primland is great for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. Children’s activities are constantly being planned to keep the kids entertained while the parents relax.

Lovers Leap Scenic Overlook

Pull off at one of Patrick County’s greatest treasures, Lover’s Leap Scenic Overlook, located south of the Village on Route 58. The view from this spot is beautiful in any season, but Autumn is truly breathtaking. Legend has it that two Native Americans from separate tribes fell in love, and after their tribes forbade them from being together they tragically ended their lives, jumping together from the cliffs at this very spot. Enjoy many more secluded overlooks at neighboring Fred Clifton Park a well as picnic tables and trails, but remember, don’t feed the bears!

From rugged mountain trails to deliciously sweet fudge to luxurious pampering, Meadows of Dan can provide the perfect pause in your travels on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

For history lovers who want to get away and experience the simple life with a variety of historical points of interest, abundant natural beauty and even some wine tastings and luxury treatments, Patrick County, Virginia is your perfect destination. Here are 20 must-see places to help you unplug, unwind, and step back in time.

The Reynolds Homestead

Step back into the Victorian era at the historic Reynolds Homestead, built in 1814. This tobacco plantation, named the Rock Spring Plantation, was home to R. J. Reynolds, founder of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Here you can take a tour of the main house and other buildings around the homestead, learn the history of the Reynolds Tobacco Company and of the enslaved men & women that lived and worked on the plantation & visit their cemetery. Take a self-guided tour around the property or sign-up in advance for a guided tour by one of the Homestead’s knowledgeable guides. While you are there, enjoy the one mile loop walk on their self-guided L.E.A.F. trail to experience the beautiful forest and learn about the flora & fauna native to the area. Visitors on the third weekend of June will be able to enjoy their annual Bushels & Barrels: Local Food, Wine & Beer festival.

Jack’s Creek Covered Bridge

Walk through the historic Jacks Creek Covered Bridge, located in Woolwine. It was built in 1914 to gain access across the Smith River to the neighboring Jacks Creek Primitive Baptist Church, where the bridge derives its name. Now substituted by an adjacent modern day steel beam bridge, Jacks Creek Covered Bridge is still open to visitors to walk through and sign the guest book. The site of the bridge is a wonderful spot for a blanket picnic or getting your feet wet in the river on a hot Summer’s day. Visitors on the third Saturday in June will be able to catch the annual Virginia Covered Bridge Festival located just across the road. The festival was originally designed to celebrate two of Patrick County’s Covered Bridges, the second being Bob White Covered Bridge which was tragically swept away by floodwaters in 2015.

Laurel Hill

Laurel Hill is the birthplace and childhood home of Civil War General J.E.B. Stuart. Upon arrival, visitors can pick up a self-guided tour brochure at the entrance and proceed onto the grounds. Visitors on the first weekend in October can enjoy the Civil War Reenactment & Living History Weekend that takes place on the property every year. Neighboring Laurel Hill is the oldest grave in Patrick County belonging to Stuart’s great-grandfather William Letcher who was a member of the local militia during the Revolutionary War. Letcher met a tragic end, being murdered in front of his family on his own doorstep by British Loyalists.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Breaking ground in 1935, the Blue Ridge Parkway was built by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to connect Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the edge of North Carolina. Spanning 469 miles, this famous scenic drive was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps camp which created much needed jobs during and after the Great Depression. No commercial vehicles, billboards or other non-essential signage are allowed, leaving the Parkway to show off the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A smooth 45 mile and hour drive down the Parkway will offer breathtaking overlooks, recreation areas with camping and picnicking, hiking trails, and abundant wildlife.

Meadows Of Dan Village

On top of the mountain lies the charming village of Meadows of Dan. Here, you will find local home-style cooking as well as many unique places to shop. Poor Farmers Market offers a variety of quirky treasures and gifts as well as locally produced honey, jams, produce and more. Concord Corner Store offers an expanse of high quality, local artisan crafts such as large quilts, household woodworks, local wines, jewelry, moroccan lamps, lace dream catchers and more. Nancy’s Candy Company is a working candy factory with it’s own delightful storefront. Inside, you can look through the windows and watch your candy being made. Indulge in a variety of fudge, chocolates, gummies and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs right through Meadows of Dan and is an easy hop on or off for a beautiful drive.

Grist Mills

Patrick County is home to two historic grist mills. The oldest is Cockram’s Mill. Built in 1885, this grist mill sits on the banks of the Dan River headwaters. The mill was also once the home of the Dan River Queen, a passenger River Boat the offered tours along the water. The Queen can still be seen today, laid to rest beside the mill. The second mill is the famous Mabry Mill, located North on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This grist mill, built in 1908, is the most photographed spot on the Parkway. In the warm months, the property offers visitors the opportunity to go inside the mill and also tour the other buildings on the property to learn about the skills and trades of the time. There is also a restaurant and gift shop on the property. In the Winter months the grounds are still open to visitors without tours or restaurant hours.

Patrick County Historical Society Museum

In the museum of the Patrick County Historical Society, visitors can learn all about the history of Patrick County. This museum houses many interesting exhibits like a rare three-seat horse-drawn buggy called a “drummers hack”, an original moonshine still owned by a Patrick County moonshiner, historical artifacts, vintage memorabilia and genealogical research assistance. Talk to a historian about where you’ve been and they can tell you where to go next!

The Hollow History Center

Make an appointment at the Hollow History Center and be treated to a walk through the history of the Patrick County “Hollow” in Ararat at no charge. On site you will find exhibits such as the Riley Puckett Cabin, the Library Cabin, a Log Tobacco Barn with farm equipment and a section of the Mount Airy and Eastern, or “Dinky,” Railroad. You will also find a collection of local history, photos and genealogy. Bring your lunch to enjoy the picnic shelter on site.

New Deal Post Office Mural

The Stuart Post Office houses one of the two surviving post office murals painted by John E. Costigan during the Great Depression. “Receiving the Mail on the Farm” was installed in 1942 and commissioned as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal project. The mural depicts a farming family pausing their work to read the mail they received. This mural has a similar sister in Rensselaer, Indiana with the same name and once had a third similar painting hung in Girard, Ohio that has since been destroyed. Visitors to the Stuart Post Office will find the mural straight back from the entrance. You can also read about this mural on the Appalachian Mural Trail.

Rock Churches Of The Blue Ridge

Made famous by the book “The Man Who Moved A Mountain” by Richard C. Davids, Patrick County is home to two of the five beautiful Rock Churches in the area. Mayberry Presbyterian Church (1925) and Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church (1932), both in Meadows of Dan, were built by Rev. Robert Childress from the stone of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can take a three hour “Backroads Tours” of all five churches created by The Mountain Laurel.

Mayberry Trading Post

From Meadows of Dan, drive South on the Blue Ridge Parkway to visit the Mayberry Trading Post. This general store built in 1892 was once the only place of commerce in the mountain community and originally served as the local post office. The store is still open to this day and offers visitors much of what was offered in its heyday. In the Fall, apple butter is made right outside the building. You can purchase homemade goods like Wild Elderberry Jam or Mayberry souvenirs. On the Andy Griffith Show, Andy talked about “the real Mayberry up on the mountain”. Many believe this area was what the character was referring to, as the show was based on the neighboring town of Mount Airy, NC.

Puckett Cabin

South of Meadows of Dan on the Blue Ridge Parkway is Puckett Cabin. This Parkway exhibit is the home of celebrated mountain midwife Orlean Hawks Puckett. She is known for delivering over 1,000 babies in the surrounding mountain area and never once lost a mother or child. Puckett started her midwife career at the age of 52 after losing 24 of her own infant s. She lived to the age of 102. Visitors can pull just off the Parkway to view her cabin home and read about her remarkable life. Want to know more? Read Orlean Puckett: The Life of a Mountain Midwife, 1844-1939 by Karen Cecil Smith. You can also ask about her at the Hollow History Center, land still owned by her husband’s family.

Philpott Dam & Lake

Built in 1942, Philpott Dam was constructed to relieve constant flooding by the Smith River into nearby towns and residential areas and to also generate hydroelectric power. Divers under the water will find the lost town of Fayerdale which was flooded to complete the project. Visitors can view the dam and the beautiful lake from the Philpott Overlook. The Visitors Center houses a small museum where guests can learn about the history of the dam and the local flora and fauna. Philpott Lake also offers an array of outdoor recreation opportunities to enjoy while you are there such as camping, hiking, paddling, boating, fishing and swimming. You can also visit neighboring Fairy Stone State Park, the second largest state park in Virginia. Here you can find outdoor adventures as well as rare staurolite crystals, locally called “fairy stones.” Pro tip: Head to the Fairy Stone Pit Stop just outside of the park for one of the best fairy stone hunt sites around.

Motorsports Museums

Patrick County is rich in motor sports history, beginning from the days of running moonshine. You can visit the VA Motorsports Museum & Hall of Fame in Stuart from 9 AM to 5 PM to learn all about the local and statewide history of the sport. Next door is the museum of one of the oldest teams in NASCAR who got their start in Patrick County, the Wood Brothers.

Blue Ridge Wineries

Enjoy the variety of three unique wineries that grace Patrick County. Stanburn Winery outside of Stuart offers delicious wines with locally inspired names such as “Highfly,” a sweet white named after J.E.B. Stuart’s battle horse. Look for their monthly wine festivals in the summer. Along the parkway you will find Villa Appalaccia. This Italian inspired winery offers many varieties of their European-style wines as well as cheese plates and the occasional live music all in a gorgeous villa setting. Just down the Parkway is Chateau Morrisette Winery. The Morrisette family have been in business since 1978, building the largest producing winery in Virginia. Have a tasting in their expansive tasting room or take a tour behind the scenes of their large operation with beautiful views.

Primland Resort & Other Places To Rest Your Head

Wolf Creek Farm in Ararat boasts an expansive, family friendly setting to rest your head. They offer many options like farmhouse rooms, private cottages and even special motorcycle accommodations. They offer cabins, bunk houses, & campsites with motorcycle-only traffic, campfires, bike shelters, bathhouses, and more all for very affordable rates. Wanting to actually get away?
