Fall is the season of harvest, and what better way to celebrate than with a road trip through Patrick County, Virginia. Home to orchards, farmers’ markets, and our annual Apple Dumpling Festival, there is no better place to experience fall.

Celebrating 50 Years

Tucked into the hill of Woolwine is a small roadside market that holds a special place in its community. Wade’s Orchard has been supplying Patrick County with fresh, Virginia apples since 1975. Located just off Route 8, Wade’s is the perfect addition to any fall road trip. Wade’s Orchard is hosting a 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 27th for 10am-4pm. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy live music, apple butter, fresh apples, and more.

Apple Dumpling Festival

Spend the day in Downtown Stuart for the annual Apple Dumpling Festival and 5k. Spend the morning running along the Mayo River Rail Trail before grabbing fresh apple dumplings later in the day. Enjoy live music throughout the day. Outstanding artisans, jewelry, jellies, preserves, housewares and more….of course, delicious foods. Stock up on fresh, local apples for your own fall desserts. The Apple Dumping 5k starts at 8am and the Apple Dumpling Festival starts at 10am.

Windy Hill Orchard

Windy Hill Orchard has been in the Noonkester family for over 100 years.

Every Thursday, September – November, you are invited to come watch as the apples are pressed into apple cider. Don’t forget to leave with a fresh jug! They also sell apple cider vinegar, apple sauce, apple butter, jams, and dried apples.

Child on father's shoulders eating an apple

Levering Orchard

Visitors to Levering Orchard are treated to pick-your-own cherries, peaches, pears, and apples in a gorgeous mountain setting.

Fall apple season at Levering lasts from September through mid-November. They provide you with buckets and ladders and send you into their expansive orchard to experience picking the fruit right off of the tree yourself.

More to Explore

Don’t forget to visit one of our many country stores, markets, and farm stands while you’re exploring the county. Spend a Friday morning at the Stuart Farmers’ Market, visit Clay and Twig in Critz, or swing by Trent Farms. With hundreds of miles to explore, Patrick County is the perfect destination for your next fall adventure.

Looking for some fun things to do while you’re in town? Kickstart your winter adventure here in Patrick County! From guided hikes to stargazing, we’ll share some of our favorite winter activities. Here are ten of our favorite things to do in Patrick County.

1. Conquer Rock Castle Gorge

The Rock Castel Gorge Recreation Area offers one of the most rewarding hikes in the County. The trail starts in Woolwine and works its way up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The elevation ranges from 3,572 feet to 1,700 feet over the 10.8-mile loop. Sections of the trail are steep and rocky. One of the more challenging sections is a boulder field known as the Bare Rocks. While strenuous, hikers are rewarded with fantastic views of the Piedmont below.

2. Join a Ranger Led Hike

Meet a ranger at Fairy Stone State Park for a guided hike. These hikes are great ways to learn more about the environment and history of the park. One of our favorites is the Moonshine Hollow Hike, led by Ranger Danny Martin. This hike explores moonshining history and takes visitors to two former still sites. Learn more about Fairy Stone’s guided hikes on their website.

3. Paddle with a Pal

Brave the cold waters with a friend and explore Fairy Stone State Park, The Dan River, or Philpott Lake. This is a great way to liven up cold, winter days, especially for photographers. Winter is a great time to see local wildlife. In a 2020 blog post, one kayaker saw otters and a pair of bald eagles while paddling Fairy Stone Lake.

4. Go Trout Fishing

Winter is a great time to trout fish. Anglers can find trout in the Dan River, the Mayo River, and the Smith River. Many smaller streams also contain trout. Keep an eye out for DWR signage along river banks, they indicate which rivers are stocked. We recommend checking out the DWR’s Trout Fishing Guide before heading out.

5. Join in the Jam at Willis Gap

The Willis Gap Community Center hosts an open Jam every Friday night. Everyone is welcome to come and play, sing, dance, or listen. The jam started in 1995 and has hosted musicians from all over the world. Doors open at 6pm and music begins at 7pm. The Willis Gap Jam is an affiliate of the Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail.

6. Hit the Biking Trails at I.C. Dehart Park

I.C. Dehart Park in Woolwine is home to one of Southwest Virginia’s best-kept secrets. The park is home to thirteen miles of single-track mountain biking trails. The park has two loops, the 8-mile east and 5-mile west loop. Riders will enjoy the beautiful scenery and exciting twists and turns.

7. Stargaze at the Primland Observatory

The Primland Observatory takes stargazing to a whole new level. The powerful telescope lets viewers reach new heights in the night sky. Reservations are required. Please call 276-222-6837 to schedule a visit.

8. Go Glamping

Connect with nature and stay warm. Glamping is a fun way to get outdoors while still having the amenities of home. We recommend Mountain Waves Yurt, Stargazer Park, or the camper at Wolf Creek Farm. For an elevated experience, the Primland Tree Houses take glamping to new heights.

9. Dine at Pickle and Ash

Pickle and Ash offers locally inspired, farm-to-table dining in a casual setting. The menu changes regularly based on what is seasonally available. Pickle and Ash also serve local wines, craft beer, and craft cocktails.

10. Take the Road Less Traveled

Take advantage of Patrick County’s mountain roads and go sightseeing. Travel to one of our many overlooks or enjoy the scenery along the road. We recommend Squirrel Spur, Orchard Gap, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Brimming with must-see museum exhibits, road trip-worthy music performances  and adventurous outings, Patrick County, Virginia offers something for every bucket list.

Whether you have resolved to see more, learn more, move more, or simply indulge more, Patrick County, Virginia is your destination to explore more in 2024.

Take in Arts and Culture

Made famous by the book The Man Who Moved A Mountain by Richard C. Davids, Patrick County is home to two of the five beautiful Rock Churches in the area. Mayberry Presbyterian Church (1925) and Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church (1932), both in Meadows of Dan, were built by Rev. Robert Childress from the stone of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Race fans should make the Virginia Motorsports Museum And Hall Of Fame a must-see stop this year. See how moonshine was made and hear the fascinating story of how this business lead directly to the birth of NASCAR racing. Home to the famous Wood Brothers Racing Team, their museum sits adjacent to this Hall of Fame.

Every Friday night in the beautiful community of Ararat visitors can experience a unique piece of The Crooked Road. The Willis Gap Community Center hosts an open jam for anyone who plays, sings, or wants to listen. Whether you’re local or just passing through, the community jam is a perfect place to stop to get a taste of The Crooked Road.

Try the View from the Top

If you are looking for somewhere to sit and relax and take in a beautiful view stop by Angel Overlook and see the magnificent views of the mountains. Angel Overlook is located near many of Patrick County’s most famous attractions such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Primland, Laurel Hill, Doe Run Farm.

Lover’s Leap offers one of Patrick County’s most stunning views alongside one of its most intriguing legends.

Winding road through green trees

Live Life in the Fast Lane

The 10 mile loop of Squirrel Spur packs enough twists, turns and drops to top every motorcyclist’s bucket list. A casual drive will give you a glimpse into the rural countryside with cow pastures, tobacco fields and pumpkin patches. For most riders, the view will be a blur of color as you ride through a thrilling series of turns, switchbacks, steep climbs and sharp drops.

Possibly the most famous stretch of the Jagged Edge, Bootlegger’s Run packs more than 100 curves into its 30-mile drive between the towns of Floyd and Ferrum, passing through Woolwine along the way. This run gets its name because it goes through the heart of one of Appalachia’s most notorious moonshine trails. If this unique piece of American history is not enough, the ride boasts some of the Blue Ridge Mountains’ most spectacular views.

Enjoy the Finer Side of Life

Since 1999, the Stanley family has owned and operated a 16-acre vineyard in rural, scenic Patrick County. Stanburn Winery offers twelve wines including Vidal Blanc (dry) Chardonnay (dry), Traminette (dry), Highfly (semi-sweet blend), Bull’s Blush (semi-sweet blend), Cabernet Franc (dry),Cabernet Franc Reserve (dry) Chambourcin (dry), Big A Red (dry, red blend), Barbera (dry), Poorhouse (sweet red), and Meadow Breeze (sweet white).

Reflecting Primland’s connection with nature, Elements offers fine dining in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Elements lives up to its name with fire flickering inside a glassed-in floating wall, earth in the glowing wooden floors, air beneath lofty ceilings, and water depicted in original artworks.
